SPACE SHUTTLE: THE FINAL MISSION
SPACE SHUTTLE: THE FINAL MISSION - BBC2 - RICOCHET
EDIT PRODUCER - 1 x 59’
Documentary on the extraordinary people saying goodbye to their life’s work, as the Space Shuttle takes on its 135th and last ever flight. During this historic period Dr Kevin Fong was granted access to the astronauts, the ground crew and the whole of NASA. While the engineering and mammoth hardware is breath-taking, we found the everyday workers proud to have touched greatness, and who deserved celebration. My favourite being the lady who, for decades, has made the sandwiches the astronauts eat once they reached orbit, but had now buttered her last bread.
“I have to say, #finalmission and other science programs are examples of why we should value the BBC, and not take it for granted.” Professor Brian Cox 25/07/11
"A rocket-fuelled homage to mankind's greatest interstellar achievements… former NASA worker Kevin Fong's brilliant, misty-eyed tribute to the shuttle's swansong.” The Daily Record, 28/07/11
“Dr. Kevin Fong’s documentary… gave NASA’s most technologically advanced vehicle the send off it truly deserved… Its most compelling content came in the form of personal interviews with the NASA personnel who dedicated their lives to the 30-year shuttle program… A wonderful and moving documentary; a documentary that captured the technological complexity of a truly beautiful machine… A shining example of what the BBC does best. It’s science documentaries are invaluable and content, such as this, will surely captivate the minds of future generations. No other broadcaster could have given Atlantis a better send off.” Matthew Evans, Nerditorial, 25/07/11
